Reem Acra is a Lebanese fashion designer, based in New York, she studied business at

the American University in Beirut and graduated in the eighties, both of her parents worked at the American university. Her father was a prominent professor and she had three brothers. In 1983 she left Beirut and settled in New York City that was a time during the Lebanese civil war.

After attending the American University she studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, she also studied at École supérieure des arts et techniques de la mode (ESMOD) in Paris.

Acra made her first ever fashion show when she was still a student at the American University in Beirut, this is something she did through the Modelling club at the university, 2000 people came to see her show, she explains in an interview with Diala Makki that this was the first fashion show ever for an Arab designer. Acra explains this was the moment she knew she wanted to be a fashion designer. She also explains how she was interested in studying garment and it’s making more than the history of fashion. One of her signature style she is best known for is Embroidery.


Fall 2018 Collection

One of her early introductions into the world of fashion was designing a wedding dress for a friend on a bet that she would finish it in three weeks, which she did, and afterwards, she sent her design photos to some media outlets, this is where she got attention from the press.

Acra first launched her fashion business in 1997 starting with a bridal collection, and in 2004 she launched her ready-to-wear (prêt-a-porter) collection. And she is a member at the Council of Fashion Designers of America and serves on the Board of the Dubai Design and Fashion Council. Besides being among the judges in the Fashion Star Show aired on Dubai TV.

Among the many stories she talks in her interview with Diala Makki about was how she went to a party in Beirut when she was a young girl wearing a dress made of a tablecloth.
